Comets Shootout (2-2)
The season opened with an exciting game against #14 Comets Servaty (Comets 2nd team). Comets led most of the game, but a second half run was enough to capture a 2-point first round victory. Offensive leaders in the game were Jared Streit (Eden Valley-Watkins) with 15, David Stokman (Maple Lake) with 10, and Jarred Merchant (Kimball) with 10. Tyler Frie (Monticello) hit a clutch triple to seal the deal. Streit recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while turning a number of NSIC, MIAC, and UMAC heads.
Game two was a matchup against a very talented and well coached Fury Johnson team (#7). Fury controlled most of the game and ended up winning by 14. Ryne Alger (Watertown-Mayer) scored 8 points, while Jared Streit contributed 6 points and 6 rebounds. Tyler Frie defended with great intensity and toughness to add to his 7 point effort.
Game three was a matchup against the #13 MN Phenom. The Phenom pace and ball pressure made things difficult. Phenom took the game by 2 points. Triple Threat was lead by Michael Veldman (Becker) who hit nearly every shot en route to 24 points and 5 assists. Jarred Merchant added 11 points, and Jared Streit contributed 9. Cole Peters (Waconia) added 4 points and 9 rebounds in his season debut after missing the Saturday games. David Stokman (Maple Lake) was making plays all over the court by dishing out 7 assists.
Game four of the Comets Shootout was a matchup with #17 WOTN-Nicols. Threat responded very well to a disappointing defeat by jumping out to a 13 point halftime lead. The lead swelled to 19 points with 6 minutes remaining. WOTN got hot shooting down the stretch and ended up making it a two point game. Triple Threat came out on top thanks to a great early effort. This game was highlighted by Jared Streit (Eden Valley-Watkins) with 11 points, David Stokman (Maple Lake) with 10, Jared Merchant (Kimball) with 8, and Mitchell Weege (Elk River) with 7. Brady Bellefeuille (Frazee) made a huge play by rising up over a defender and finishing an and-one basket to peak the lead at 19. Cole Peters (Waconia) dropped in 6 points inside while Tyler Frie (Monticello) added 5 points including some clutch free throws. Tommy Sletten (Mounds View) made a few key plays to contribute 4 points, as did Ryne Alger.
Overall, the opening tournament was a positive experience including three 2-point ball games and a great learning experience against Fury Johnson. The unranked Triple Threat team put themselves on the map by "upsetting" two top-20 teams (according to Northstar Hoops Report). The team is coming together well as every player scored in the final two games of the event. The next tournament will be out in Sioux Falls the weekend of April 26-27.
